Abstract

The introduction of total body perfusion and regional hypothermia has opened an avenue for a direct surgical approach to the coronary arteries. A period of a half hour or more of ischemic and functioning
heart can be safely attained by supercooling the heart, either by placing it in ice and/or coronary perfusion, during which time it can be fibrillated; in addition, direct resection, grafting and anastomoses of the coronary artery may be performed.
We report here the fate of the myocardial system in eight dogs, 12 months after the grafting of a free internal mammary arterial segment to the circumflex artery under hypothermic conditions, but without coronary perfusion.
